Educated in Wales and London, Lewis worked in Calcutta, collaborating with notable figures like David Douglas Cunningham. He later served as a Professor of Pathology at Netley and contributed to discussions on cholera contagion theory. David Douglas Cunningham (1843–1914) was a Scottish medical doctor and researcher known for his work in public health and medicine in India. He investigated cholera's spread, focusing on bacteria and fungal spores in the air, and contributed to early aerobiology. Cunningham served as a professor of physiology in Calcutta and participated in significant cholera studies alongside Robert Koch. A Fellow of the Royal Society, he published numerous works on medical and botanical subjects, reflecting his diverse interests.
